The Ekadashi that occurs in bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the Hindu month Ashwina is called the Papankusha Ekadashi. On this day, the deity named Lord Padmanabha is worshiped, who is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
Hence, keep the Papankusha Ekadashi 2015 Vrat (fast) and receive the blessings of Lord Padmanabha. It is said that if someone observes fast on this Ekadasi, one may get all the luxuries of the world and gets rid of the sinful reactions.

It is said that if a person observes the fast on the day of Papankusha Ekadashi, the one would go to heaven after death. It is also believed that even if someone conducts 1000 Ashwamedha Yagya or 100 Surya Yagya, it could still not be compared with the 16 th portion of the benefits of Papankusha Ekadasi. Hence, one should observe the Papankusha Ekadashi fast to get all these benefits. Also, the one who observes this Ekadashi fast gets healthy and wealthy by the effects of Papankusha Ekadasi.

Legend of Papankusha Ekadashi

As per the legend of Papankusha Ekadashi, there was a cruel hunter named Krodhana. He lived on the Vindhyachal mountains. The hunter always committed sinful acts, throughout his life. He was always involved in acts like killing, violence, drinking, and theft. A day before the hunter was going to die, Yamaraj (the death god) ordered his aides to tell him about the same. After listening to his death news, the hunter became afraid. He reached the saint named Angira. He asked the saint that as he is going to die, he had a regret for all the sins and wants to get rid of their evil effects, after death.
The saint advised him to observe the Papankusha Ekadasi Vrat. Hence, Krodhana observed the fast of Papankusha Ekadasi and chanted Lord Vishnu's name all over the night. While, chanting the Mantras, the hunter fell asleep; the envoys came to take his soul to hell, but could not succeed in the same. Rather, his soul was taken to heaven as when he died he was observing the Papankusha fast.

Papankusha Ekadashi 2015: Rituals Of The Day

Rituals are an important part of the fast. If you are going to observe the Papankusha Ekadashi Vrat in 2015, do check out the rituals to be followed on this day.
The one observing the Papankusha fast should wake up early in the morning and take bath. New clothes are to be worn on this day. After this, Idol of Lord Vishnu is worshiped by using incense sticks, flowers, and fruits.
It is said that the rituals of the Papankusha Ekadashi are to be followed from Dashami (the tenth day of Hindu month). One should worship the seven cereals namely - rice, Moong (green grams), wheat, barley, gram, and Urad (black lentil). One should also avoid committing any sinful acts and should not speak lie. Also, if you are going to observe the Papankusha Ekadashi Vrat in 2015, do not eat a food containing salt and spices, on this day. Devotees chant devotional songs all over the night. The fast gets over on Dwadashi (the twelfth day of Hindu month).

धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर कहने लगे कि हे भगवान! आश्विन शुक्ल एकादशी का क्या नाम है? अब आप कृपा करके इसकी विधि तथा फल कहिए। भगवान श्रीकृष्ण कहने लगे कि हे युधिष्ठिर! पापों का नाश करने वाली इस एकादशी का नाम पापांकुशा एकादशी है। हे राजन! इस दिन मनुष्य को विधिपूर्वक भगवान पद्‍मनाभ की पूजा करनी चाहिए। यह एकादशी मनुष्य को मनवांछित फल देकर स्वर्ग को प्राप्त कराने वाली है।

मनुष्य को बहुत दिनों तक कठोर तपस्या से जो फल मिलता है, वह फल भगवान गरुड़ध्वज को नमस्कार करने से प्राप्त हो जाता है। जो मनुष्य अज्ञानवश अनेक पाप करते हैं परंतु हरि को नमस्कार करते हैं, वे नरक में नहीं जाते। विष्णु के नाम के कीर्तन मात्र से संसार के सब तीर्थों के पुण्य का फल मिल जाता है। जो मनुष्य शार्ङ्‍ग धनुषधारी भगवान विष्णु की शरण में जाते हैं, उन्हें कभी भी यम यातना भोगनी नहीं पड़ती।

जो मनुष्य वैष्णव होकर शिव की और शैव होकर विष्णु की निंदा करते हैं, वे अवश्य नरकवासी होते हैं। सहस्रों वाजपेय और अश्वमेध यज्ञों से जो फल प्राप्त होता है, वह एकादशी के व्रत के सोलहवें भाग के बराबर भी नहीं होता है। संसार में एकादशी के बराबर कोई पुण्य नहीं। इसके बराबर पवित्र तीनों लोकों में कुछ भी नहीं। इस एकादशी के बराबर कोई व्रत नहीं। जब तक मनुष्य पद्‍मनाभ की एकादशी का व्रत नहीं करते हैं, तब तक उनकी देह में पाप वास कर सकते हैं।

हे राजेन्द्र! यह एकादशी स्वर्ग, मोक्ष, आरोग्यता, सुंदर स्त्री तथा अन्न और धन की देने वाली है। एकादशी के व्रत के बराबर गंगा, गया, काशी, कुरुक्षेत्र और पुष्कर भी पुण्यवान नहीं हैं। हरिवासर तथा एकादशी का व्रत करने और जागरण करने से सहज ही में मनुष्य विष्णु पद को प्राप्त होता है। हे युधिष्ठिर! इस व्रत के करने वाले दस पीढ़ी मातृ पक्ष, दस पीढ़ी पितृ पक्ष, दस पीढ़ी स्त्री पक्ष तथा दस पीढ़ी मित्र पक्ष का उद्धार कर देते हैं। वे दिव्य देह धारण कर चतुर्भुज रूप हो, पीतांबर पहने और हाथ में माला लेकर गरुड़ पर चढ़कर विष्णुलोक को जाते हैं।

हे नृपोत्तम! बाल्यावस्था, युवावस्था और वृद्धावस्था में इस व्रत को करने से पापी मनुष्य भी दुर्गति को प्राप्त न होकर सद्‍गति को प्राप्त होता है। आश्विन मास की शुक्ल पक्ष की इस पापांकुशा एकादशी का व्रत जो मनुष्य करते हैं, वे अंत समय में हरिलोक को प्राप्त होते हैं तथा समस्त पापों से मुक्त हो जाते हैं। सोना, तिल, भूमि, गौ, अन्न, जल, छतरी तथा जूती दान करने से मनुष्य यमराज को नहीं देखता।

जो मनुष्य किसी प्रकार के पुण्य कर्म किए बिना जीवन के दिन व्यतीत करता है, वह लोहार की भट्टी की तरह साँस लेता हुआ निर्जीव के समान ही है। निर्धन मनुष्यों को भी अपनी शक्ति के अनुसार दान करना चाहिए तथा धनवालों को सरोवर, बाग, मकान आदि बनवाकर दान करना चाहिए। ऐसे मनुष्यों को यम का द्वार नहीं देखना पड़ता तथा संसार में दीर्घायु होकर धनाढ्‍य, कुलीन और रोगरहित रहते हैं।

भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा- हे राजन! जो आपने मुझसे मुझसे पूछा वह सब मैंने आपको बतलाया। अब आपकी और क्या सुनने की इच्छा है?
