Lord Mahabaleshwar Temple is located in the Old Kshetra

Mahabaleshwar, 6 kms. north of the main town. It is one of the

oldest Shiva temples in India, revered for its Swayambhu Lingam

said to date back from the time of the demon-king Ravana. The

current structure, noted for its Hemadant architectural style of

south India, was built in the 16th century by the Chanda Rao

More dynasty. The lingam enshrined within the sanctum

sanctorum is in the shape of a rudraksha. It is called

Mahalingam as it is self-originated and is considered superior

to the twelve Jyotirlingams. The temple also has a raised

platform on which Shivaji is said to have weighed his mother

Jijabai in gold for charity.

Mahabaleshwar is the source of the sacred Krishna river

that flows across the Deccan plateau. The river flows out

from the site where the Panchaganga Mandir stands.

Located in the Old Kshetra Mahabaleshwar, the temple

was built in the 13th century by Raja Singhandeo and

renovated in the 16th and 19th centuries. It is said to

contain the fount of five rivers - Krishna, Koyna, Venna,

Savitri and Gayatri. The legendary source of the rivers is

Gomukh - the mouth of a cow carved in the stone wall of

the temple. Apart from its immense religious significance

which draws hordes of pilgrims, the temple with its ancient

stone carvings is also an architectural wonder.

About Mahabaleshwar

Nestled amid the verdant valleys and the stately rise of Western Ghats, Mahabaleshwar is Maharashtra?s most popular holiday resort town. It is a vast plateau rising 1372m above sea-level and was the designated summer capital of the Raj-era Bombay Presidency. While numerous trekking trails beckon the adventurous traveller, for the exhausted city-dweller it offers a rejuvenating mix of antiquated charm ? in its ancient temples and colonial buildings, breathtaking natural beauty ? with its magnificent views of the flat-topped ghats and dense evergreen forests of the majestic Sahyadri range, and bustling modernity ? with the touristy hordes and the central Malcolm Peth bazaar.
Mahabaleshwar is known as the land of strawberries - the Red Lady and Sweet Charlie varieties are excellent - and during the strawberry season it is common to see vendors perched on the roadside serving delicious Strawberry Creams and milkshakes. One of the main attractions is the Annual Strawberry Festival held in March where one can literally gorge on strawberries for free at various farms. Other fruits like mulberries, blueberries and raspberries are also farmed here. Other local specialities like honey, Chikki (peanut-jaggery brittle) and corn pattice are worth sampling too. Exclusive hand-crafted leather footwear from Kolhapur is also available in the main bazaar.

Gokarna Temple:The temple here is dedicated to Lord Mahabaleshwar, an incarnation of Lord Shiva. Gokarna is situated on the banks of Arabian Sea, and this coastline is surrounded by natural beauty with five beaches and hills along side, the traveler can choose his favorite for himself. The meaning of Gokarna is "Cow's Ear". This sacred place is located between the Gangavali and Agnashini river mouth and it is named for the ear-shaped meeting of two rivers. It is also believed that Gokarna gets its name from the legend in which Lord Shiva emerged from the ear of a cow.Shivaratri festival is celebrated at Gokarna with great enthusiasm. Every year a team constructs up two great temple chariots that are used during the Shivaratri festival. Om Beach in Gokarna:
Om beach is located at a distance of approximately 8 km from the town of Gokarna. Two semi-crescent shapes that join together resembling the Hindu religious symbol ‘OM’ is the reason behind the name of the beach. There are four of them called Kudle Beach, Om Beach, Halfmoon Beach, and Paradise Beach. Each has its own appeal. Om Beach is the most happening beach, and is the only one that's reachable by car or rickshaw. The others are around a 20 minute hike away from each other through the hills and over rocks, or a short boat ride away

    Nearest Airport: Goa

Nearest Railhead: The railway station is 10 km away from the town. The nearest railhead is at Kumta.
