Why strict No to Non-Veg food during Navratri?
Many of us believe in the philosophy of quitting their favourite edible or avoiding materialistic luxuries to please the God and receiving blessings in return for fulfilment of the desired wish. This concept is prevalent during the seven or eight days of fasting of Navratras. Yet if you are not one of those who can fast, still you have to abide by the rituals of food pattern in the house.
Remember- Strict NO to Non-Vegetarian food!
All of us are aware about the prohibition of non-veg food items and even onion and garlic during Navratri festival; so let’s explore the cause behind it.
*NAVRATRI occurs during the two major changes of season i.e. fall into winters and then winters into spring. This period has the highest probability of affecting our immune system; and such changes in the nature and environment around us also brings alterations within us. Thus it is better to go for easily digestible edibles which are healthy and nourishing and also activates the positivity within you.*
Other reasons for avoiding non-veg:
- Non vegetarian food is high in Tamasic content that consumes a much longer time for digestion and creates an aura of irritation and negativity.
- The animals are slaughtered inhumanely which leads to a cover of pain and distressing ene
rgyaround the meat; which keep on growing as we consume them. - Certain issues likerespiratory diseases, heart diseases, indigestion and even cancer can be caused due to excess of proteins.
- The Sattva-guna begins to decline within one, over powered by the violent and ferocious
- Lack of positivity disturbs the spiritual experience of an individual and he deviates from his motive of life.
Though all these points mentioned above will compel you to think about it at least once, but there is no law against it and it is not a sin to eat meat. Yet those of us who prefer Sattvik over Rajasic or Tamasic are able to reach the spiritual destination, much quicker and easily.

Significance of Day 5 of Navratri: Goddess Skanda Mata

Why you should fast during Navratri – Scientific and spiritual reasons?

Many of us believe in the philosophy of quitting their favourite edible or avoiding materialistic luxuries to please the God and receiving blessings in return for fulfillment of the desired wish. This concept is prevalent during the seven or eight days of fasting of Navratras. During the seven or eight day period, the devotees performs complete (Nirjal or Nirahar) fast or partial fast for pleasing Goddess Durga and seeking her divine grace.
The devotee performing fast wake up early and after having bath they worship the deity. Certain people consume the food just once a day while others prefer a specific diet. High energy (tamsic) food like meat, egg, alcohol, grains, pulses and any kind of spices and salt are avoided in the diet. Beverages like milk, juices, coconut water and tea can be taken along with diet consisting of potato, sago or vrat-snacks. Common salt is replaced by rock salt (sendha namak) during these days.
People observe these fast for either regular seven or eight days and many of them keep it for few days only. The eighth day (Ashtami) or ninth day (Navami) is reserved for paying homage to nine small girls and one boy throughkanya pujan or Kanchika Pujan. Special food is prepared according to the varied rituals among family, which is offered to the nine girls in the form of nine devis. Certain dakshina or new utensils are also offered to them. Then the prasadam is consumed by the family to break their fast and mark the completion of auspicious navratri.
Scientific Relevance:
Fasting is a natural healer as during this process the energy is utilised for maintaining the metabolic rate and restoring the immune system. It heals the dead cells and damaged tissues of the body along with burning away the extra toxins. The monotonous tiring journey gets a halt, or the time to rejuvenate our body, mind and soul during the festive season. Festivals are a source to revive the feeling of togetherness and spread the aura of love and humanity around. It brings back the essence of realizing our true self and gaining immense energy from the vast Universe.
Navaratri are the nine days of joy, enthusiasm, fun and celebration to cherish the victory of good over evil. Literally ‘Nav’ refers to nine and ‘Ratri’ is night, so Navratri is the nine nights and ten days period to receive the powerful grace of Ma Durga. Navratri is celebrated twice a year in the month of Ashwin and Chaitra as per Hindu calendar, which are the season of revival in the nature. Goddess Worshipped on the eighth day of Navratri: Maa Mahagauri

A 16 years old unmarried Goddess Parvati, in this form does penance to get Shiva as her husband.
Lord Shiva cleaned her with water from Ganga post the intense Tapas performed by her without moving to remove the collected soil and dust from her body and rejuvenate her again. Goddess Mahagauri has the power to fulfill all the desires of her devotees. The one who worships the goddess gets relief from all the sufferings in life. Mahagauri literally means the one who is clean and bright like a ray of lightning. This particular form of durga is a significance of Purity, Calm and Peace!
Bagalamukhi Dasamahavidya or Pitambari Dashamahavidya is worshipped by Dashamahavidya sampradaya sect. Vajreshwari Devi is the Goddess to worship on Durga Ashtami as a part of Saptamatrika Navaratri or Ashtamatrika Navaratri. On Durga Ashtami, Bathukamma, the biggest festival of Telangana state is celebrated in Andhra Pradesh. Goddess Worshipped on the seventh day of Navratri: Maa Kalaratri

Also known as Shubhamkari, Kalratri maa is the one signifying the black light. She is the one who is responsible for destroying ignorance and removing darkness from the face of the earth. This is the most violent form of Durga and it is believed that, in this form, she licked the blood of demon Rakta Beeja who had the capacity to bring out thousand demons from a drop of blood spilt from his body. This form primarily depicts that life also has dark side – the violent Mother Nature and creates havoc and removes all dirt. In Skand Purana, Maa Parvati liberates Devi’s golden outer sheath and becomes dark complexioned then Goddess becomes Goddess Kaalratri.

Born as the daughter of Sage Katya of Katya clan, she derives her name from her very origin and birth. Maa parvati’s partial expansion grew in Sage Kartya’s home and gets energy from trinity and demi Gods. In this daughter form of durga, she loves, is caring and docile and yet despite being the epitome of love, is not afraid to show anger to defend righteousness and Dharma.
In this particular form Durga is worshipped by girls to find a suitable husband and have a prosperous married life.
